lackadaisial, thanks for the lovely compliment.
And what you said about coming up with something original and wondering where it came from--that is very funny, but so true.

I see what you're saying.

Sometimes I'll write a really good poem, or description, and I'm like, did I come up with that cause it sounds too good to be true.  I think that must happen to all writers though.

You're a great writer by the way.

Heheh I think we've all written about this subject. We all share a brain.. scary isn't it.

groucho, I think it was, but I can't be certain anymore...
too many brain cells have already been destroyed ;-)

you know quirky
you are right on all counts.  Which means that great minds do think alike...was that the point of your post? I forget! tg

groucho, haha, that's funny. But guess what?
I know you weren't being serious, and neither was I. (I almost never am!) And I think I know that you knew that i knew that you weren't, hehehe. Make sense of that if you can!

i don't really believe that
i was just sarcastically referring to my post!  Besides you don't want to be in my head! No one should!  Not even my "soul mate"!  I know I can't stand the thought of being in hers!  tg

posted by tbgroucho on June 17, 2004 at 11:23 AM | link to this | reply

Hi groucho, I wasn't referring to you, I know you did drop my name in
when you wrote your post. ;-) There were many others that didn't, and anyway, that was just one example to make a point, which was, that it would be nice to know when your post inspires someone to write something about the same subject. And...so you believe we are all soulmates, then? Heaven help us!! ;-)

harveyg, good thing you put the little winky-face at the end,
or I might have been tempted to take you seriously...for once!

posted by Julia. on June 17, 2004 at 11:12 AM | link to this | reply

first of all, dear quirky

I'm pretty sure you were mentioned in my soulmates post, but if not, I'M SOOO SORRY!  There. You and Moondawg and Fat Guy were the pivotal bloggers in my writing that post.  So now you know.

Secondly, I've often felt that my ideas have ended up mysteriously in advertising.  My college friends and I all felt that one of us was a Madison avenue spy -- they thought it was me since I was from New York but they were wrong.  I do have a friend in advertising but I'm sure she's never stolen anything from me except her cynicism.

I have no original ideas to share -- but since we are all soul mates maybe you'll get them telepathically anyway (hmm got a poem from ages ago on this, really stupidly funny... must find...) take care, quirk. tg

you already wrote my story dammit.

Talion, thanks for the explanation. I know nothing of these things,
but can't you call your fictional characters any name you want to?

It's a variation of lex talionis and basically means an eye for an eye, let the punishment fit the crime, etc. My character's name was going to be Alexander Talion. I still my do it. All they can do is sue me.

Talion, what does it mean??

That's what I planned on doing. I know about the concept of reinventing the wheel that you spoke of (no pun intended). I stumbled across my user name when I was in college, was going to use it as the name of the lead character in this novel I was going to write. A couple years later, I discovered there was some B movie made with a character with the same name. Currently, some guy writes a science fiction/fantasy series about someone with this name as well. Oh, well. My Talion will live on, even if it's only here.

mark2556, I will probably have to pass on that this time around.
But, er...thanks anyhow!

Talion, all you have to do is wait a week and everyone
will have forgotten! And I will read it, regardless.

This is exactly why I mentioned in a comment to you that I would have to postpone writing about meeting and falling in love with my wife. After your posts about soul mates, my series would seem "inspired" at best, "copied" at worst, even if the material itself was totally different. Here, perception is everything.

posted by Talion on June 16, 2004 at 6:57 PM | link to this | reply

You're missing the original part,  you. No one else in the whole wide world has, does or will see life as you have. You are the unique part. Let's take vampires. I love vampires. Anything with vampires comes out, I read it, watch it, buy it. My favorite vampire methos is the Anita Blake Series. It is maybe 10 years old and still going. The vampires aren't original. The characters are unique.

As every writer is unique, every character can be too. HUGS!

Scriber, yeah, BUT...where did the "original idea" come from...originally?

posted by Julia. on June 16, 2004 at 6:35 PM | link to this | reply

"Dawg," yeah, but at least you don't deny it when I ask you, LOL!

posted by Julia. on June 16, 2004 at 6:34 PM | link to this | reply

rewriting is what makes it original most people know the old story that
Time the magazine started as Time the newspaper rewritten. Still is in the main probably.

Original ideas,
who has time for original ideas, it's easier to steal them form you Quirky.

Monte, inside Stephen King's mind would be a fascinating place to visit,
IMO, along with another favorite of mine, Anne Rice. Now if  I had that kind of wacky stuff inside my brain, I can only imagine where I'd be now, LOL.

Scriber, no, they wouldn't be exact, but I think the "point"
would be the same, unless I intentionally tried to make a different one. Assuming I had one, LOL.

If two of my friends think alike, I'll dispense with one of them...most writing teachers say that the best source of ideas and creativity is your own life and experiences because they are unique to you...you have inside of you everything that you need to create your own...Stephen King insisted on that in his book On Writing, his creations were permutations of his own weird imaginations concocted from materials already inside his mind.

Quirky, try it. Do anothr blog on Great minds think alike, without looking

at your old blog and then compare, see if they are exact. Maybe approach it from the many versions of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.  West Side Story, for example different culture, different environment.  love s.

Scriber--wow, so you're saying that you can't even copy-cat your own work?
That IS a feat!

posted by Julia. on June 16, 2004 at 5:49 PM | link to this | reply

writing of course reflects each individual's study, memory, enviornment.

Thus no two will write exactly alike unless one is a copiest. In my book, The Cure, I write about the same incident forty times, and each time it is different. Not tatally different, but not exactly the same either.

posted by scriber on June 16, 2004 at 5:37 PM | link to this | reply

Scriber, yes, but if two people have the same idea at the same time,
even though they put their own spin on it, the "idea" itself  must have come from the collective consciousness of the universe--and as such can never be "totally original"

posted by Julia. on June 16, 2004 at 5:32 PM | link to this | reply

quirky j. I agree that totally original ideas are impossible. But if two
people write about the same subject at the same time without either one having read the other, and without using the same source material, if any, than the material most likely will be very original in concept and writing in both cases.  When I was trying to be somewhat humorous I did not read other posts that I knew were trying to be humorous in order not to consciously or no pick up too much from them.  I never read Chris, for example, even though one or more of his girlie mob accused me of copying him, or more likely it was Chris posing as a girl mobster. Actully I think a humorous should real very little in humor, etc.

posted by scriber on June 16, 2004 at 5:25 PM | link to this | reply

Scriber--but do you agree with my theory on "totally original" ideas?
Your comment just inspired me to go back and add to my post, because I wondered if you thought I believed copy-cat blogging was bad, which I don't. Then again, half of the time I have no idea when you are kidding or being serious or just writing "over my head."

posted by Julia. on June 16, 2004 at 5:05 PM | link to this | reply

like Mack Donald invented the hamburger; but seriously, I do see literally
dozens of copy cat bloggers, and of course, a lot copied from yours truly.  Now that I only write one blog it's a little harder to copy from me but it happens enough still. I'm not too concerned.  I still deny that I invented the "List" althought I did have about six or seven "Top Ten" Blogs running one time. love frank.
