I'm already trying to filter TV for mine, and he's only 9  mos old! He sure loves Big Bird though. Sometimes, I put the tv on one of the digital music channels, like Classic Rock, or Masterworks. Sometimes I just tune into a channel in a different language, and leave it on in the background  all day. It can't hurt to be exposed to other languages. They say that in the first two years, a child is already capable of using sounds from every language there is. They develop in accordance to their environment after that. So why not give them a diverse environment to develop in!

A very good solution is to get rid of the cable,

or else to block all the channels so your kids can't tune in to stuff while you're not there.  Several families that I know, only subscribe to PBS.  That's the station that takes the round antenna.  But, if you don't have cable, you can't get Road Runner.  I say, life is too short to live without Road Runner, if you can afford it, and you're constantly online.

Anyway, if you get rid of the cable, then you can control what movies you watch by renting them and practicing free speech when something disgusts or disappoints you after you start to watch it.  That's happened a couple times with my husband and me.  One will say, "Do you like this?"  And the other will answer, "No.  Let's watch something else."  We almost always rent more than one movie so that we have an alternative if one turns out to be objectionable.
