maj, it is the new problem of water, salty, alkaline fields from over

watering. Huge framed areas are dying off because of this problem and the solutions offered in the book are just as scary as the problems. The new challenge, to undo the harm done by cheap water and facing future realities, or ignoring them and killing off more farm lands, emptying our grocery baskets of inexpensive foods.

Thanks for adding your memories to what the book has taught me. There is a new show on television this week called Las Vegas GREEN and I'm not going to find it marvelous, like they hope that I will. Venice canals in the desert, horrifying.

My grandparents lived in Lucerne Valley, CA.

Between 1956 and 1965they had to extend their well due to water table depletion by alfalfa farmers in the desert. The water became more alkaline. Tasty, but not as good for irrigation when it evaporated and left the minerals behind.

Now...not very damn many farmers of any sort there.
