The sad truth of the matter is that The Da Vinci Code is just that: the truth. More learned Christians know all about the obfuscations and pagan facades adopted by early Christians so they could 1)worship without being persecuted and 2)so that Christianity would become more acceptable to the masses (this after it became the state religion of the Roman Empire). They just play their knowledge extremely close to the vest. For the rest of the hypocrite horde: ignorance has always been bliss.
