I totally agree. Prozac changed my world. Fuck anybody that doesn't understand!

I think a combination of Western and alternative methods is best...
I tried Prozac and Xanax (anti-anxiety) together, prescribed by the shrink at my college, then after leaving college switched doctors...the new doc prescribed Paxil and that worked nicely on the anxiety, but after taking it for over six months I found it didn't do much for the depression.

I am writing a novel about my experience...a preview can be found in "Dylan's Thoughts on Tobacco and Other Blessings" on Blogit. The main character, named Mitch (I decided on third-person narrative) is in the grip of major depression and tries both medication and alternative methods.

Right now, I am off the Paxil and on something called Sam-E "mood support" supplement, as well as a B-12 tablet, magnesium tablets, and cod liver oil! B-12 is good for energy if you're fatigued, like me, and the Sam-E and cod liver oil (rich in Omega-3 fatty acids) are supposed to help with moods.

I think on the whole, a mix of conventional and alternative methods is best. They may sometimes be mutually exclusive (like I believe you can't take an SSRI-antidepressant and St. John's Wort at the same time) but other times both can be tried simultaneously. It's worth a try!

The alternative
or safety valve is both a comfort and a very frightening thing. Like you I have tried all the different ways to keep it going, but it finally came down to those little pills in the end. What ever it takes I guess.

If it saves a life, it's well and good...

But taking anti-depressants almost took mine...

That is why I'm so against them.  I feel alternative medicine offers just as good medicine with none of the side-effects.  The hard part is finding someone who really knows their stuff...it's not a "do-it-yourself" kind of thing...

I think you made a wise choice!

Dana, glad you're sticking around and found the help you needed.
When the chemicals get out of whack, sometimes alternatives just aren't quick enough to save someone from themselves.  I know of such cases...
