Writing a book on transgender
I have a sinking feeling that as the author you are not transgendered.  If this is the case, I hope you consult with lots of people who are transgendered. I am not confident that you can do a good job of  this without knowing the life first hand.  So little is know about the  origins and causes and progression of  gender reorientation and reassignment.  We don't even have a theoretical framework and the subject is covered in taboos and silence.  The person who wrote to you just before me demonstrates a vas amount of ignorance on the subject.  I will be posting essays on my own tg experience and you might want to read it.  Rather than I ask you questions, perhaps you need to be asking me questions.

SInce no one else will pipe up

I've worked with a number of transgender (genotypic male, trying for female) clients in a correctional setting, and they tend to be (no, they all have been) very unhappy, dysfunctional individuals (even worse than the run-of-the-mill inmate). Of six I can remember, every one was a drug addict, all but one had HIV and he has Hepatitis C, and their efforts at forging a female personna within the jail setting were generally self-defeating and used as a scam in an effort for special benefits. None of this showbizzy Lou Reed crap.

The only question I would have, I guess, is about a factual history about the origins of trangenderalism (versus simple male homosexuality or cross-dressing). This assumes a simplistic division between transgenderal versus homosexual, because there are interpersonal and social gradations.

Good luck,  and be patient.
