Note on "traditional" Top Blogs list

Since people understandably like the "traditional" Top Blogs list -- you know, the one on the current home page, with the new posts from each blog -- I just wanted to note that it's still around. It's just been moved to a new Top Blogs page, which you can get to by clicking the "More Top Blogs" link.

No rules

I don't think hr's work, generally, in a middle column, but you might try some other graphic element to visually break up that column. (Perhaps a tiny version of the blogging network logo?)

One other suggestion might be to strengthen the common element of the subject heads (Featured Blog, Featured Writer, etc.). This has the added benefit of highlighting those words to assist with the visual categorization, because when I first looked at that page, I couldn't immediately tell what was in the middle column.

And I agree that the blog name and user name is redundant -- throughout, not just in the top 10.

Also, I like the top 3 lists in a random category, but I would add all the categories since the list will look less busy with only blog name or user name. And, again, it strengthens the visual categorizations (middle column = editorial features; right column = lists). And I would move "Blogging Network News" to the left column to reinforce it's category: company related/provided info.

Okay ... here are some suggestions that may be tough to implement soon.

1. How about putting the stuff into "sections" whose dimensions (edges) can be moved by the Blogging Network member?

2. How about allowing the member to pick and choose which "boxed sectoin" to display. For example, if I don't want to see the "Featured Blog", I should be able to eliminate it from my view into the Blogging Network world.

I know, I know! I said that I would not provide too much input. But I was motivated by the fact that the left side of the new page looked like it did not need to be as wide, and I wanted to shirnk it! But couldn't.

I miss the posts listed under the blog names in the Top 10

Okay, here is one that seems to be a bit more of an issue. I miss having the post titles under the names of the blogs in the Top 10. This helps me decide if I want to go read a particular post or not!

"The center does look busier. Maybe some separators between the sections would work better."

I second this, maybe even different colors or something?

Whatever you all decide is fine with me, what I care most about is the servers and they're working great, at BlogHog and here.

Thanks.

Yeah ...

1. The size of the Top 10 is too small compared to the others. So I agree with that feedback.

2. The center does look busier. Maybe some separators between the sections would work better.

Again, these are merely suggestions. Use the appropriate grain of salt!

Works for me

Look forward to others' comments but I think the new home page does a better job of conveying what's significant about the Blogging Network community by showcasing blogs, writers and comments and stating what the site is about.

Some feedback

Here's some of the feedback received so far:

  • The Blogging Network description (just under Welcome) doesn't stand out enough, since the eye goes to the featured blog section. How about making "Blogging Network" bold and/or larger?
  • The Top lists are difficult to read because of the writer's nickname being linked and the full blog name being shown. How about not linking the writer's nickname, since there's already a link to it on the blog, and showing only part of the blog's name?

Absolutely!

So, here's just one question. We've created a "snapshot" of what the home page might look like, attempting to strike a balance between just enough and too much information. Does this look too busy already?

Some change is good, but ...
All good suggestions. I have just one: don't make the first page too busy. With everyone wanting something a bit different ... you will never please everyone anyway. So, please avoid having "a camel is a horse designed by a committee" problem.
