I am amazed
at how quickly we forget the lessons we profess to have learned from the past: Lessons from tolerating McCarthyism; Lessons from tolerating Internment of the Japanese; Lessons from tolerating slavery ... Lessons from tolerating any unequal treatment of our citizens/residents.
The glory of this country is "individualism" which I define as the opportunity to rise on sheer will and effort irrespective of any group you may be associated with, ergo Freedom of Association. This is a flawed theory as we all know, but Freedom of Association has to be a paramount rule. Anytime we have ignored it we have suffered.
So I am worried about "Homeland Security" and "Patriot Laws," grounded in fear and designed to strip away the very foundational rights that make this country good. We all should be.
What can I do to help? I stand ready.
