More people
I agree, we need more people to the site. I've found several big writing clubs, and I'm in the process of trying to drum up support. Now I know BN doesn't like the idea of bleeding writers away, but I think we have to be honest and say it's a two way things. Steve

Design is important but so is editing

I logged on here because I planned to comment and will that many times blogs zoom to the top, ergo earn money because they write about things about which an outside non-blogger/ reader would probably not want to read:  Gossip, technique, yada yada. So despite the fact the BN graciously created a forum within which those topics can appear,  I don't see it getting used much; because no money is paid.

I have worked as an editor and know that the writing of a magazine, e or otherwise, has to be geared toward the expected class of readers.  At BN a lot of our top writing [ based on popularity] is geared to each other, in many ways we pay to chat with one another, despite the fact that BN has provided us an alternative option through email and in some instances here.  So the real question is how many outsiders would be willing to pay to see us chat?

In my opinion, you have to increase the number of outside readers before any of us can expect to make more money.

blogg money
With most bloggind available for free, I think you more you charge, the fewer people. It might be better to work on getting more people to sign up for BN than getting the poeple signed up now to pay more....MOllyb

To expand on Geri's idea...
How much would a consumer, unwilling him- or herself to write blogs, be willing to pay (per month or per year) for our blogs? That's how magazines determine how much to charge and whether or not to sell ads: by how much their target market is willing to pay for their content, basically using the same method of distribution BN uses. (That is, the reader pays for the material, takes a magazine home, and reads whatever article he or she wants; the publisher is then free to use the reader's magazine payment, in combination with the monies he or she earns from ads, to pay writers what the publisher feels that the writer's services are worth.) How much is the audience willing and able to pay for Blogging Network blogs? How much can BN charge before revenues drop off to the point where they can no longer pay us? (Questions Themestream failed to consider before it was founded, by the way - basic questions of how to derive income from readers without having to rely on investment bankers and so forth.)
