I've been both a Yankee hater and admirer since the days of my youth.  I hated them because they always seemed to win the pennant, which meant my Tigers didn't.  But I always admired the awesome combination of talent they had on a single team.  I loved the Mick and Yogi, The Babe and Larrupin' Lou -- you couldn't hate those guys, only their team.  I have similar mixed feelings about Duke.  Although UNC is my first love in college sports (and also pretty admirable in their graduation rate) I admire the powerhouse that is Duke.  I even pull for the Blue Devils when they play a non-ACC opponent.  But this is not the Duke of Bubas and Waters.  This team was molded by the chief disciple of Bobby Knight, and it shows in Coach K's demeanor and in the way he has ruthlessly discarded fine scholar-athletes in the past.  Don't let yourself be fooled by this B. K. clone.  He says all the right things, and he wins without throwing temper tantrums, but deep down he is another Bobby.

I am a Yankee Hater
and I am enjoying it while it lasts. For my view of the Yankees see my blog entitled Yankee Championship--meaningless.
I'm rooting for Duke because they have the highest graduation rate of any team in the Final Four. For more on that check out my blog entitled Hating College Sports.

I'm equally juiced about the new season.  I think there are going to be a lot of surprises before all is said and done.  I just have that feeling like I had back in '98 when I told people that McGwire was due and could hit 70 if he could stay healthy.  I think the Red Sox are going to take the Yankees if their pitching stays healthy.

I'm optimistic about Urbina, flake or no.  It looks like he may start off in AAA to get in better game shape, but I can wait another week while I relish the thought of having a proven closer in the fold.  Tiger pitching may just be working its way to mediocre, but mediocres across the board would be a welcome improvement over last season.

I hope we're as optimistic six months from now.  In your case, I hope you're looking forward to another month of baseball to come before 2004 is wrapped up.

Baseball Season

So you picked up Urbina, that's a good addition.  Just hope he was kidding when he said he hadn't picked up a baseball for five months.  He's a closer for sure, but he's a little wacko.  He keeps saying he wants more money from the team he's with, and he ends up signing for less somewhere else.

I'm am so juiced for the season to start I can't even read the Spring training reports anymore.
