Well ...

The Wherify device has a key-fob device that does the unlocking, or a password-protected web site for remote unlocking. While not completely fool-proof (you could trust a family member or friend with the fob or password), it does provide one degree of security.

Continuous watching of children is not a realistic option. You have to leave them in school, etc. child abductions have been known to occur in an instant, with kids walking off in crowded shopping malls with a complete stranger "to help them find a lost puppy". There was an eye-opening "20/20" television show on just how easy it is for kids to be fooled by an adult in this regard. Plus, being with a child continuously is likely to drive any parent insane in short order.

So where is my child really?
I agree Humayun that for me that is the scary issue...that most of the kidnapping is done not by total strangers but by acquaintances. We the parents are the ones who provide access to our child to them. We are vigilant around strangers but understandably let our guard down around acquaintances. I live in Silicon Valley, where everyone is from somewhere else, and people are constantly moving, so its hard to get to know acquaintances well. The only viable alternative to the Wherify child tracker seems to be close supervision of kids. Also, police stations will provide, on request, a list of convicted sex offenders and their addresses living in your neighborhood

Wow...

I just looked at this device, and it certainly is presented well. Here, in Oregon, the issue has received a lot of press because of the two girls who vanished earlier this year, and it now appears their neighbor was responsible.

As happened there, kidnapings -- "less than 2% of all violent crimes against juveniles" -- are usually done by family or acquaintances. Such people would probably know about the device, and perhaps even know how to remove it. Even so, that still leaves the kidnapings by strangers...
