Borders? iUniverse worked fine for my AI4U book on artificial intelligence.
So everybody is getting into the act, even though print-on-demand (POD) publishing does not seem to be very profitable? In October of 2002 I went with iUniverse.com and was quite pleased with the process and the results. One drawback is that these self-published books apparently will not be assigned a Library of Congress number for catalogging purposes, and will therefore not easily get into libraries all across America. Library of Congress numbers have to be applied for in advance, pre-publication. It is also hard to get your self-published book reviewed, although I got a very satisfactory review from Book News of Portland, Oregon, after I mailed out seven review copies to seven potential reviewers in early January 2003. (Then the review copies started showing up in used book stores. Grab 'em -- sales of AI4U are currently so low that it is numerically a very rare book ;-) A self-published AI4U book with original theory-of-mind diagrams may still change the world by introducing true artificial intelligence.
