Fields was hawking a “medicine” that he claimed cured hoarseness. He coughed and rasped his way through his spiel, seemingly barely able to speak, holding up a bottle of the stuff the whole time. Then, with a mighty flourish, he gulped down a swig of the potion, ostentatiously cleared his throat, and bellowed out in full voice, “It cures hoarseness! Who’ll be the first to buy a bottle?”
