Crest Jump

"Did you see the guy with the ten-foot board?" The aging surfer asked me. "Yeah. I got him in mid-air." Emerald Isle, NC. August '07. Sign in to see full entry.

Thief of Hearts

Lucas, 4, is very photogenic. He loves to pose and make cute faces. When he was a baby, he looked just like the Gerber baby. I took this on a whim in Kibler Valley one afternoon this fall. Sign in to see full entry.

Thank You

The great thing about coming back is the positive comments and well-wishes. I have missed that. You all are a great bunch of people. I wish all of you the best in your writing. This is Mabry Mill, a working grist mill just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was very busy that day, but the colors were... Sign in to see full entry.

The Harvest

Alan Horde is a farmer here in Patrick County. He quit growing tobacco and started growing pumpkins this year. They are everywhere! He has a contract with Wal-Mart. Amazingly enough, these orange jewels survive very cold temperatures. They look like orange lanterns on the barren, distant slopes. Sign in to see full entry.

The Crew

I took this at the beach in August. Sam is at the top, then Luke, and Noah. We stayed at a beach house in Emerald Isle, NC. It's good to be back here, and to be missed. It means a lot. Maybe I'll muster up some writing. Who knows? Sign in to see full entry.

They rise 1500 feet nearly straight up on the eastern side. Good to be back and I'll be reading shortly. Sign in to see full entry.

Smooth Sumac Tea

Poison sumac is what most people think of when the word sumac is mentioned. Yet, that is only one species of this versatile plant. Here is smooth sumac. It is most easily identified by the colorful berries that mature in mid-summer. I have read that one can take these berries and immerse them in a... Sign in to see full entry.

Slippery Elm

Once you realize what an elm leaf looks like, they are easy to spot. Slippery elm has the distinct long tip and scruffy leaves and hairy stems to boot. The manuals say there are none in this area. For the most part, they are right. But they are here. The inner lining of this tree is slimy during the... Sign in to see full entry.

Jewel Weed: Try it on Skin Rashes

I had always heard that Jewel Weed was excellent for poison ivy. You take a couple of leaves and scrunch them up, until the juice comes out, then wipe it on the affected area. The other day, the boys and I were traipsing in the woods when I encountered a violent skin reaction to a plant. It wasn't... Sign in to see full entry.
