A Seed Saving Day

I spent a goodly portion of my afternoon saving seeds from my garden. I put them in envelopes and mark them for next year. It is something I enjoy doing immensely. I think giving back to the earth is something we must all do in some form. My plants are mostly heirloom plants and or organically grown... Sign in to see full entry.

Potatoes in the compost. well...leaf mold

I had a compost pile started with mostly leaves in it. I had not thrown much else of anything in there with the exception of a few grass clippings. So it was not an "official" compost pile in my expert opinion. A few weeks ago I had some potatoes that had started rotting and had grown eyes. I cut... Sign in to see full entry.

It’s March 1st in Texas; get in gear for my garden

Today is March 1st. Here in Texas it’s time to get in gear for the coming garden year. Actually, I have some seeds coming up already. I planted some radishes, lettuce, and snow peas. They are all coming up. I put some lima beans seed in the ground, but they did not come up. I am ready for some great... Sign in to see full entry.

The cold got almost all the plants

In the aftermath of the cold spell we had this past week, all the tender plants are gone now. My favorite, the basils’, had succumbed to the cold before this on. This last cold wave got all the rest of the stuff. The tomatoes and peppers along with all of the annual herbs are gone until next spring.... Sign in to see full entry.

My garden is truly an “international” garden

This is true. I live in South Central Texas many miles from any “international” border. No, it has not seen visitors from any foreign lands. Yet, the way I see it I have a garden that is truly “international” in every respect. Let me explain. I use the French biointensive method developed by Alan... Sign in to see full entry.

A great day in my garden!

Yesterday was a wonderful day in the garden for me. I got out early and worked to turn over my soil and begin the process of planting all sorts of plants. This is one of the most enjoyable things I do in life. Getting our in my garden is spiritual and healing to me. Yesterday was a wonderful day in... Sign in to see full entry.

A wonderful sit in one of my garden areas

Last night, right before I went to bed and after finishing off my day I took my two labs and sat by one of my small garden areas. I brought a large flashlight to shine on the area and have a quick look. What I saw was amazing and made me look at my garden from a different perspective. Usually when... Sign in to see full entry.

First “official” 2005 Day of Gardening!!

Today was my first “official” day of gardening for the coming growing season. It was a beautiful day out and I made the most of it. I was up early to look around and take stock of the garden and its environs. I have to admit we are lucky in Texas. Many places in the country still have snow covering... Sign in to see full entry.

It helped me heal some yesterday!

I think of my garden as a healing garden. I use the herbs and vegetables in my meals so I eat better. I use the flowers to lift my spirits and show me the beauty our planet has to give. The whole garden concept for me is one of healing. Yesterday after having a very large kidney stone zapped I took... Sign in to see full entry.

A couple more weeks and I will be ready!

My yard and garden are looking pretty rough about right now. It has been somewhat neglected over the winter months. I will need to get out and begin to get it ready for the upcoming growing season. It looks surprisingly good for having been neglected for a few months. I need to get out in the yard... Sign in to see full entry.
