One syllable, two syllable, three syllable, four syllable, more…

Monosyllabic means having one syllable… which makes one inquire: Why does it take five to describe words with just one, when all the others are categorized by a word with three of ‘em? Methinks it must be for prevention of that most dreaded condition: syllabic envy. Hey! Stop throwing stuff at me. I... Sign in to see full entry.

Golly, gee-whiz aroonie!

Holy cow, Batman! You zoomed to number 50 in Poetry! Pow! “Please excuse the gratuitous sound effect,” he said with difficulty around his tongue firmly stuck into his cheek. “I needed another syllable to make the faux haiku work.” Sometimes your words come back to haunt you. A couple of months ago,... Sign in to see full entry.

Feelin’ “blue”

Feelin’ “blue” shouldn’t mean you are feeling depressed or “down in the dumps.” Blue is a color that can be happy, pleasant… even appealing: Beautiful blue eyes, soft and peaceful shades of blue, a clear blue sky, Carolina blue, and brand new baby boy blue are not depressing. So why the bad rap for... Sign in to see full entry.

Happy Anniversary, Baby

Do you remember the day we wed, or the day you left forever? Not a haiku, really -- just a question I might pose to the Ex if the opportunity arose. Our wedding day, thirty-five years ago ranks right up there with the day my son was born as one of the two happiest of my life. I often regret the fact... Sign in to see full entry.

...about...

things that go bump in the night, giving you a great big fright, and creepy crawlies galore, monsters and beasties of lore... of these I would like to write...about... Not at all sure I like this effort. I do like it considerably more than anything else I've jotted down, poetry-wise, for a couple of... Sign in to see full entry.

Just for fun: a reality check for poet's in Q and A form

Question: What could be worse than poet's curse: a rhyme to nurse for a small verse, so very terse, and a small purse? Answer: The place of honor in a hearse. As a child I had the mistaken belief that all poetry had to rhyme. Since it turned out that I wasn't very good at coming up with rhymes, I... Sign in to see full entry.

Pome

Four letter words are impolite and improper. P-O-E-M, damn! "Poet" is also a four letter word. That's why I'm "notapoet" -- it's an eight letter word, even if it is an invented word. "Pome," by the way, is not an invented word. You can look it up in the dictionary. The meaning is a little different... Sign in to see full entry.

A poem -- with a seventeen syllable title, of course, of course

A poem for you, 'cause I've slipped a spot or two in ranking...boo, hoo! Next time I think I'll use a one syllable word for a title just to fake everyone out. I was going to call it "A poem" for the same reason, but decided that wasn't short enough. Besides, the idea that I actually care a flip... Sign in to see full entry.

Why I write poetry, with an assist from the late, great Ogden Nash

Poetry is not my game, and it's not my claim to fame. But it does make me smile, to play at it for a while, shifting the words and phrases many different wayses. I have to admit that it's occasionally fun to play with words and see if anything like a poem happens. For me it seems to be most... Sign in to see full entry.

Borrowing from the classics for some pseudo haiku inspiration:

Violets are blue, roses red, and fragrant too... deep breath, ah-ah-choo! 'Tis what drivative poets and hopeless non-poets do in an attempt to slide by. Notice how it is made to work by reversing the traditional opening lines, dropping a word, and adding a few very brief phrases that take the work... Sign in to see full entry.
