Whoops!

Miscalculations can cost you. Yesterday I lost a day of blogging. No big deal, right? Well, a little bigger than it would have been, say, six months ago when I was blogging regularly. Regular blogging involved posting something almost every day. Missing a day for any reason was just a minor glitch.... Sign in to see full entry.

Thunder boomers abounded in North Carolina today.

And I’m loving it. It’s giving us some much needed rain as well as breaking a string of about a gazillion 90-degree plus days in a row. The air is cool and everything smells fresh. Best of all is that it’s great sleeping weather. The sweet air and the sound of the rain has my eyelids so heavy that I... Sign in to see full entry.

Phone service, please.

I spent part of last week looking into phone service providers other than my old one. A phone company can screw you only so many times before you consider any alternative except them. But recent events may force me into considering them the best provider available in spite of my distaste for them.... Sign in to see full entry.

Catching up ain’t no fun

So I’m not planning to indulge in the practice to any great extent. Since last haunting these pages I’ve become a grandfather for the third time and learned that my daughter-in-law is already pregnant again. She swears they are going to stop at four. I’ve heard that before -- “two is enough for now”... Sign in to see full entry.

Happy Birthday, Son.

Yesterday was my son’s 29 th birthday. There was no big celebration, no fancy party with friends and family. It wasn’t much different than any other day in his life this week or this year. If anything it was a little harder on him because he had a little extra on his table to deal with that had... Sign in to see full entry.

Another good day.

I spent the late morning and early afternoon of Wednesday housesitting for my son. His wife, who has been having problems with her pregnancy, keeps going into pre-term labor. She had a scheduled checkup today and my son went with her. Normally I would have been babysitting my three-year-old... Sign in to see full entry.

More Drama On The Home Front

My daughter-in-law spent most of the day in the hospital with premature labor once again. Everything is okay now. She is on bed rest and special medication for the problem along with frequent checkups. My mind is relieved, but my body took most of today to recover. After being up most of Sunday... It was a hectic week.

And this week is likely to be more of the same. Saturday morning put a good cap and a positive swing on it. My grandson’s five-and-six-year-old basketball team won their first game! I know I’m just a proud grandfather. But it was a classic case of overcoming adversity to triumph. My grandson’s team... Sign in to see full entry.

Friday was recovery day.

I got a chance to catch up on my sleep after all of the extra babysitting and associated chores I was called on to perform while my daughter-in-law went through an uncomfortable couple of days. It was recovery day for her, too. She spent Wednesday night in the hospital but was deemed okay to return... Sign in to see full entry.

Shooting Hoops

My grandson got a basketball goal for Christmas. It’s one of those portable ones with an adjustable height feature to make it easier for young beginners to sink a few baskets. New Year’s Day I heard the familiar sounds of a dribbled basketball followed by the sound of a ball bouncing off a... Sign in to see full entry.

Just venting.

I missed blogging for the third time in a week yesterday. It wasn’t intentional. If I had my druthers, I’d prefer to blog every day. It just isn’t possible as long as I have to depend on the availability of someone else’s phone line in order to get online. You’d think it would be easier to blog... Sign in to see full entry.

James Brown was one of my favorite performers.

Honestly, I didn’t care for that many of his songs. But he put on a great stage show. He was so much fun to watch I didn’t much care what he was singing. I remember being amazed at the energy he put into his performances when I was a young man. I remember being amazed at the energy he could still... Sign in to see full entry.

Is anybody counting down the oldies?

I used to love it at the end of the year when my favorite radio station would count down their Top 40 or Top 100 songs of the year. When I was still in the retail music business I would keep track of the countdown and compare the song titles to stock on hand. There were always a few requests for... Sign in to see full entry.

Happy day after the day after Christmas!

Hopefully you’ve had time to dispose of all the scraps of wrapping paper and other trash generated around the big day. Sometimes I think it’s a relief for the parents to have the day over and done with. I know I occasionally felt that way when I was a young family man. Choosing the right gifts,... I didn’t blog yesterday.

I suspected I might not. It wasn’t because I wanted to take Christmas day off. Other considerations came into play. First off, I was up till nearly daybreak blogging the night and morning before. So it’s understandable that I spent a good part of yesterday catching up on my sleep. Christmas Eve is... Sign in to see full entry.

Rich is as rich does.

Being wealthy ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. I can’t speak from personal experience about being wealthy. I never quite made it that far, although I was once a moderately well-off business owner. I do know that having a lot didn’t make me substantially happier than when I had to scramble to make... Sign in to see full entry.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

I don’t know what the amount on the next Power Ball drawing is. The last time I looked it was over $40 million. I think I’ve bought one ticket since the last big winner and, of course, it wasn’t the winner. I don’t have a ticket for tomorrow’s drawing and I probably won’t get one unless I take a... Have you ever started out to do one thing and ended up doing another?

I’ve had a lot of that in my life lately, including right now. Some four hours ago I started out with the intention of doing some blogging. I’m just now getting to it. I’ve probably explained before that I do my blogging at my son’s house because I don’t have a phone at the present time. I know I’ve... Sign in to see full entry.

Testing, testing...

This is only a test. I've been trying to post to this blog off and on for approximately two hours. Every time I try to save & post, the system won't let me and wipes out what I've pasted in here. Rather than cutting and pasting the whole thing again, I'm throwing this out to see if the system will... Sign in to see full entry.

“Oops, I did it again.”

Sorry about that. I just couldn’t resist. I missed another day of blogging yesterday. I hate missing my blogging, but it was unavoidable. My son and the grandkids were gone most of the day yesterday -- and so was my access to a convenient phone line so that I could get online to blog. He worked... Sign in to see full entry.
