Silly Season

Our first Christmas away from home. Friday December 21, 1990 We took the children to Darling Harbour for Christmas Carols by candlelight. The Wesley Mission put on a spectacular Christmas Pageant which was televised, and afterwards illuminated ships set out from Cockle Bay (further along from... Sign in to see full entry.

Three months

Tuesday 11/12, 1990 Quite a gap. We have had fourteen weeks here now, past the three-month milestone. Very hard to feel content while we still miss our life in England so much. We are moving at the weekend and hope that this will make all the difference. It meant we would be able to take delivery of... Sign in to see full entry.

Not quite so hunky dory

19th November 1990. Eleven weeks on; (my niece's) eighteenth birthday, and (former neighbour's). I bought neice a fabric-covered basket with a quilted top, hope she likes it. Today I took Ed Crosslands in the Berowra Valley bushland reserve for a picnic, with Kim and a couple of others from the toy... Sign in to see full entry.

'Pie' n eering

When we initially arrived as I think I mentioned, we rented a house for just three months. It was time to start looking for somewhere else and it came about in quite an odd way. I had met the potential landlords, the wife at least, at playgroup with my 4-year-old. 15th November 1990 Mum rang –... Sign in to see full entry.

Penal Colony Mentality?

13th November 1990. It slowly dawns on us that no-one writes to us here; we’re now forgotten as everyone at home gets on with their lives – nothing has changed for them, whilst, for us, nothing will ever be the same. I decided to keep an “Only in Australia” file for various snippets that I come... Sign in to see full entry.

Two and a half months in

11th November, 1990. Armistice Day, and our tenth week here. It’s been a strange week, one of contrasts and bigger than usual ups-and-downs. Tuesday, the first one in November, was Melbourne Cup Day, and everything stops for the big race at 2:40. A group of us had a champagne lunch at Bella's,... Sign in to see full entry.

Out and about

31st October 1990 Eight and a half weeks now. Yesterday was really hot – 29-30 degrees Celsius all day. I left the car parked in the sun – no choice, no shade – outside Seabrook shops, for no more than half an hour at midday, and when I returned the plastic edge of Ed's car booster seat was... Trying to adjust

I am having a bit of technical trouble pasting from my word documents and in pasting from notepad instead there is a problem with line spacing. If anyone has any ideas how to fix this I'd appreciate it. 22nd October 1990 Weekend over, out house hunting again. Very boring for the children but we have... Sign in to see full entry.

Still learning

19th October 1990 The day after Ed's fourth birthday and party – six little boys including two babies. Quite successful, and for the second time his party was outside and in hot weather (his second birthday was spent in Miami). A few words about the Australian banking system – principally, how to...
