Life with the Boy - 3 -'

We are watching a TV show that we've recorded, because Stepson is playing squash. Halfway through he bounces in, with his usual loud 'hall-o' from the front porch, after bursting through the heavy oak front door with force and speed, such that the half-glazed doors into the hall rattle. I sigh... Sign in to see full entry.

A Changing Tide

After last week's challenges, things have changed. Feeling I couldn't wait any longer, I rang the Pension service to chase them up a bit. A good thing too, since they hadn't progressed my claim at all. (You have to 'claim' your State Pension, just like your workplace Pension). The very nice lady... Sign in to see full entry.

Definitely Up the Creek

I've been here before; at one point during my long and tortuous separation I had under $2.00 in my bank account, and the nice lady in Australia who was processing my 'Widow's Allowance' (for women separated after the age of 45) was wonderful. Somehow I survived on this pittance, until the divorce... Sign in to see full entry.

Car - thank you

I had some good comments around my car problems.. thanks all, and suffice it to say that it is being very well behaved now, having cost me a lot more than I thought it would. Naughty thing. It needed new front suspension arms (?) as well as the ESP thingy... result, one 2008 car roadworthy for... Sign in to see full entry.

Off the Bone or Skinned?

We took an elderly friend to lunch recently, at ‘one of the best hotels in the country.’ The three-course set lunch is excellent value, and we like taking V out from time to time. We used to take her with her husband, who sadly died almost two years ago. As expected, the menu offered several... Sign in to see full entry.

Car Trouble

In the last couple of weeks I've needed all my wits about me, finding out how to get my car fixed so that it will pass its MOT which is due very soon. I now know more than I ever wanted to know about the ABS/ESP system on my Ford Focus, and I wish I could just pop it into my Ford dealership and have... Sign in to see full entry.

To Cape Town and back - safely

Isn't it funny how many 'experts' appear when you say you are doing something out of the ordinary? I was talking last week with a friend about my coming trip to South Africa. Some months ago I ran the gauntlet of my children's vehement objections to my going out there all on my own; they said it was... Sign in to see full entry.

A Nod to Naut

I've had trouble (as we know) deciding on going to Cape Town or not, and thank you to Kabu, Naut and CCT who responded to my weekend ramblings. The more pacifist view would be for me to give up the idea of making this trip, and I very nearly did, since I can't (literally) find any 'big girl's... Sign in to see full entry.

Cape Town or not?

Good friends of mine invited me to their daughter's wedding, a good six months ago. I would very much like to go, and it wouldn't be a problem but for the location. It's Cape Town, South Africa. Around the beginning of the year I broached the subject with my loved one, who doesn't know the daughter... Sign in to see full entry.

Time for a little working out again...

This morning I was a bit taken aback when my partner said he wanted to move a couple of thing upstairs, out of his study. The pieces in question are a small Davenport, and a card table - both antiques, both nice things in themselves. He wants to put them in the small bedroom I use as a... Sign in to see full entry.
