Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Bee "Colony Collapse Disorder"

The Bees' Needs Honey bees are mysteriously vanishing across the country, putting $15 billion worth of fruits, nuts and vegetables at risk. Like carrots? How about cucumbers, broccoli, onions, pumpkins, squash, apples, blueberries, avocados, almonds or cherries? These crops, among others, can't grow... Sign in to see full entry.

I looked down, and boom! A bee. Freaky!

I saw a bee, not a wasp; not a bumblebee; a regular bee. Outside my window is a nice patch of long grass and clover. This morning I saw a bee there going from clover flower to flower. I don't know why I was so relieved. I told myself it means that all the bees are not dead. But no one said the bees... Sign in to see full entry.

"Ooh...aah...cutest dog I ever saw...littlest dog I ever saw..."

I have been reading THE COLLECTORS, 2006 novel by David Baldacci. He's one of my favorites. Mostly government mysteries, but the occasional family story -- one that comes to mind is the Appalacian tale of a couple orphans who meet their "granny" in a remote part of the mountains. It is entitled WISH... Sign in to see full entry.

Happy Independence Day!

I'm ALIVE. I'm AWAKE! And my mother has escaped from the hospital. My favorite niece -- remember Iowa Caucus Night? She's here with her entire clan, so I'm out the house, stopped at Starby's for my Morning Tea, and loving every minute! The doctors told Mama she would have to have twenty-four hour... BOOM BOOM BOOM! "Yes?" "Dad, we have to go up to Iowa State to get my photo ID." Oh, right. It's nearly four P.M. I am sound asleep, and tomorrow or the next day we have to go up to the campus to pick up her photo id. Now I know. May I go back to sleep? Boy, my battery is getting a good charge. I've... Summer -- Recharging My Own Batteries

I would rather be at Starbucks right now. But they're closed. I'm about slept out, but there's still six weeks of vacation left. So, what do I do? I take a bike ride -- this year I wear a helmet. I watch TV. Tonight I found an old Bill Murray movie that I missed back in 1998. I was a little busy... Sign in to see full entry.

My Mother Going Homefrom the Hose Pistol

But not to her home in Adel. She will fly to Tucson from Omaha after the Fourth. My brother, you may remember, has a house with an adjoining mother-in-law apartment. I stayed there the two or three times we went. It is cozy and has a separate central AC system. Mama can watch the desert life out the... Sign in to see full entry.

Bloggers Join Class Action Lawsuit in the Midwest

I awoke from a very long nap and took a five-mile bike ride around the neighbrhood. It looks like the destroyed homes will each qualify for $28,000 regardless of the assessed value of the home. Not enough. It appears that locals will sue the city for damages. Looks like that old levee next to North... Sign in to see full entry.

Conspiracy of Neglect? or Incompetence?

Last night Dave drove James and I home around two AM. I had ridden my bike to his place across town, so we threw it in the back of the pick up. We drove past North High and checked out the prgress there. Water is out, carpets and drapes are removed for cleaning. It should be ready to open in time... Sign in to see full entry.

My Mother's Hospital Bed + North High School News

My mother has achieved 80 steps with walker, starting at 40 this time last week, so she has graduated out of the Rehabilitation wing, and has chosen the Sub-acute wing of the same facility in Des Moines, because she's still not independent enough to go home. So here I am watching her eat fish and... Sign in to see full entry.
