Old dog, new tricks, again!

Once more I am faced with a giant learning task. I am poised to re-enter the work force as a school bus driver. I don’t know how someone can look forward to something with equal anticipation and dread! On one hand, the discipline of today’s youth is quite different than when I was a child and faced... On being a grandpa

We human beings sometimes think there are things we don’t like even though we may have never experienced them ourselves. I have heard a few grandfathers who thought it was ok or even cute for their grandkids to call them “Pop-Pop”. My personal prejudice was that this sounded stupid. Mostly because I... When in Rome

Last weekend (when I was still 65) I got back on a dirt bike and had a 5 minute ride. While it wasn’t the smartest thing to do, it was very satisfying. The old Yamaha YZ 125 snarled, smoked and sang it’s two-stroke song. It tempted me to climb a small mound. It was so cool, I decided to do it again... Sign in to see full entry.

Birthdays aren’t what they used to be.

No ice cream, no cake. I changed the oil and filter on my truck today, how exciting. I was going to weed spray the lawn but that is hard to do in a torrential downpour. I’m not sure when the birthday fairy stopped coming around and making it a special day, probably 50 or so years ago. It may be fun... Sign in to see full entry.

To continue or not to continue?

That is the question. Lately I find myself spending way too much time on Facebook. I have just about worn my camera out taking photos of my grandkids and our cats. I am afraid the specter of retirement looms large. I thought I would enjoy it and just blog my ass off. The problem is two-fold. First:... Sign in to see full entry.

Strange cravings

Why is it we humans would rather rip open a bag of greasy chips and munch away rather than chomp into a crisp apple? The chips are dry and you can see the grease on your fingers. The apple is sweet and good for you. No candy can compete with a fresh cut pineapple. When they are just right, there is... Sign in to see full entry.

Odd creatures we are

We go about our lives thinking things will always be pretty much the same. Then, upon returning to our small town, we were greeted by a phalanx of emergency lights flashing across main street. Although we were several blocks away, it was apparent the street was blocked off and the thick grey column... Sign in to see full entry.

Where have I been?

Wow, from Thanksgiving to now all seems a blur. Suddenly blogging took a backseat to, well, life. Thanksgiving was at our house again, so naturally, the cleaning began a week ahead of time. Cooking make-ahead dishes is a pain but really helpful when the feast begins. Then the run–down to Christmas... Sign in to see full entry.

Sometimes the true story...

The rain and snow mix was coming down hard. I was in the back seat with my 22 month old grandson who was sitting contentedly in his car seat. We neared my son’s driveway and our focus shifted to whether or not we would make the hill. He swung wide to clear the garbage cans next to the road when... Sign in to see full entry.

A few words about the Mayan Calendar thing

Why is everyone fixating on what is bad information? How do I know this? First, in Cozumel, Mexico our tour guide, a Mayan informed us that the Mayan Calendar wasn’t “ending” it was just the end of one phase and the start of another. It is called a long count calendar. Why no one mentions that it... Sign in to see full entry.
