Things to Look Forward To

I've been feeling quite battered lately with all the things that have been going on around me. There's an illegal war being waged in my name. There was the suicide of a dear friend two weeks ago. And I have a clavicle that was robbed of it's chance to heal by medical incompetency. So I've decided to... Sign in to see full entry.

How Do I SOD (Sleep On Demand)?

I'm discovering some weird stuff about sleep. I needed to be up at 1.15am today to go deliver milk. So, I went to bed at 9pm last night, tired enough to sleep, but my mind and body had other ideas. I was still awake at 11pm, probably later, and then woke in a panic at 12.45am, thinking I'd slept in.... Sign in to see full entry.

Thank Crunchy It's Friday!

Even though I don't work in the conventional sense, with a 9-5 routine, I still enjoy Fridays. There always seems to be a general feeling of relief around the place, as if all the individual pockets of happiness about the forthcoming weekend, two days off, time with the kids, time in the garden, add... I Need a Del-A Button For My Head!

Most of you watch TV. Many of you have been watching the war unfold on your screens, hour by hour and day by day. I don't know how you do it! I woke up this morning at 6.30am, well before the alarm but in a state of alarm. I was fresh out of a nightmare where I was on the streets of Baghdad. There... Sign in to see full entry.

Working to the Dawn Chorus

My alarm went off at the ridiculous hour of 1am this morning. By 1.20am I was out the house, and on my way to help Ken's son deliver the milk. I've just got back, scruffy and exhausted. What with deliveries most mornings, and collecting money most evenings, grabbing sleep and leisure time in the... Sign in to see full entry.

Death Passes Through

And is almost gone again. On Thursday we cremated Ken. Almost 300 people turned up at the crematorium. Many were herded into the ‘spare’ chapel, while many others stood outside in the sunshine to listen to the service across the PA system. His two sons were pall-bearers, and they also did an amazing... Sign in to see full entry.

A Tough Day Ahead

I went to the chapel yesterday to visit Ken. It was the only way I could really convince myself he's actually dead. Today, at 2pm, we'll gather at the crematorium to say goodbye. When I say 'we', I'm not sure who I'm talking about, exactly, but I expect there will be a lot of people there. With him... Sign in to see full entry.

Into a Dead Friends Shoes

My friend who died on Friday was a milkman. To those outside the UK, this meant he got up at unfeasibly early hours to deliver milk to the doorsteps of his 1,000+ customers so it was there when they woke up. He'd been doing this for the best part of thirty years. Yesterday morning, I left the house... Sign in to see full entry.

R.I.P. Ken F.

On Friday I lost a dear, dear friend. He was like a big brother to me, and now he's gone. He woke up on Friday, decided he could take the inner pain and turmoil no more, and took his own life. I am so, so sad. He leaves a wife, two sons at university, and a milk delivery business with upwards of... Sign in to see full entry.

A Day of Friends

I had a lot to do since I got back off holiday (Chamonix) yesterday and before I leave for the SW tomorrow, but I was happy to be interupted by some really good friends. Peter invited me along to see a band last night. P joined us, and it was a good night of song and chat and beer. Today H came by... Sign in to see full entry.
