Holiday Greeting Cards
There are 67 holiday greeting cards decorating the cabinet doors in my office. There are explicitly Christian cards, featuring wise men, the Holy Family, Bethlehem stars, scenes of Bethlehem, and doves of peace. There are explicitly Jewish cards featuring menorahs and Hanukkah or L'Shana Tova...

ReCaptcha -- Preserve Old Books and Fight Spam!
I just have to tell everyone about this awesome program! You know those annoying boxes that you get at some websites where you have to type in a string of numbers and/or letters to prove you are a real person and not some bottom-feeding, scum-sucking bot? That's "Captcha" technology. I can't stand...

Too Many Giftings
I think there is too much emphasis on gifting these days. I suddenly realised that every place I go nowadays has a "gift exchange" at Christmas time. It's too much, and I am usually the poor sap who ends up with some useless thing she cannot stand and will never use. Seriously, my office has an...

Government Permits -- BAH!
I've installed a new security system in the house. And braved downtown Memphis in all of its ghastliness to get the alarm system permit, which can be gotten only at City Hall. Why they can't mail the darn thing, or let my security company give it to me, is completely beyond me. I live about 20...

Stop With the Christmas Stuff!
People, it's not even Thanksgiving yet! So chill! Stop putting Christmas ads on the television, radio, and billboards. Stop playing Christmas music! Stop, stop, stop! The year has so many wonderful holidays. Could we celebrate each holiday fully before jumping to the next one? Our society makes me...

.Dave. and the Potting Shed

You did what I didn't have time to do. You took my seeds and planted them, and encouraged other writers...

My Friend's Gone?
Wow, I'm stunned. I couldn't get online from home last night, so I peeked in to check my account from the office this morning... I needed one cent to make enough this month to get a payout, and I wanted to see if it had made it. (It had.) But I was stunned to see that my friend and loyal...

I Want to Read This Book!
I read about a book in a news article today, and I'm going to find a copy at the library and read it. It's called " Stop Dressing Your Six-Year-Old Like a Skank!" I mean, that title just says it all. What IS it with bitty kids, barely out of the nursery, running around in low-rise pants with bare...

Condoning Statutory Rape
Read this story before you read my article, if you haven't already heard about the middle school that's offering contraceptives to its students. I have a problem with this on a number of levels and for a number of reasons. But the biggest reason that I oppose this middle school's new "program" is...

Note to Ellen: Choices Matter
I’m really tired of the news stories about Ellen Degeneres’s dog. She screwed up and her mistake has caused a world of hurt for a number of innocent people. That’s the long and the short of it, but that makes for a rather short post. So let’s look at the situation. Situation Summary: As I understand...
