Flexible Work Schedules

In a stark reversal of earlier trends, Democrats won a bare majority of the votes of married people with children under 18 in the 2006 midterm elections. If they want to reinforce this new and positive development, and deal with persistent voter fears that they aren't genuinely family-friendly,... Sign in to see full entry.

Iraq vs Vietnam

One of the most frequent and controversial lines of argument about the Iraq mess has been the idea that it represents a repetition of the U.S. experience in Vietnam. The parallels are obvious: an overwhelmingly powerful U.S. military gets itself bogged down in a theater related to, but ultimately... Sign in to see full entry.

Faith - Is common ground best?

It seems to me that it makes little difference whether the person who believes they have a monopoly on the truth is religious or atheist. Perhaps the assumption that religious people are somehow more prone to this tendency tells us more about the modern (Western) discourse ON religion than it tells... Sign in to see full entry.

Will Bush ever learn?

I was not terribly surprised to learn how quickly George W. Bush got tired of the bipartisanship rap he dusted off and rehearsed several times last week. In case you missed it, Bush´s first official action after the November 7 debacle is apparently going to be to send up a big batch o´previously... Sign in to see full entry.

Hoyer deserved to win

So, House Democrats voted today, and elected Steny Hoyer Majority Leader over John Murtha by a big 149-86 margin. I´m happy with that result, and not terribly surprised, given the dues Hoyer has paid, the broad support he had across the usual factional lines, and various issues raised by Murtha´s... Democrats' Priority List

Here is a the list of issues that I expect the new Democratic Congress to pass, whether that means Bush will sign any of these into law, is another question, but if Congress can pass these couple of things in the next two years, we will have positioned ourselves to take the White House in 2008. •... Steny Hoyer for Majority Leader

Last Tuesday, Democrats won back control of the House in a stunning reversal of the 2004 election. The Democratic victory represented a striking repudiation of a Bush administration and Republican Party that has so often subordinated problem-solving to power seeking, competence to ideology, honesty... This entry is motivated by a statement made by Speaker-Elect Nancy Pelosi supporting Jack Murtha's strange challenge to Hoyer as Majority Leader in the next House. It's strange because there's really not a case to be made for any failing by Hoyer as Whip; it's all about Murtha's late-life emergence... Sign in to see full entry.

In something of a surprise, Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold has decided against pursuing a run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008. "Although I have given it a lot of thought, I cannot muster the same enthusiasm for a race for president while I am trying simultaneously to advance our... Sign in to see full entry.

Whose Agenda really lost in this Election?

In this election, both the Religious Right and the secular Left were defeated, and the voice of the moral center was heard. A significant number of candidates elected are social conservatives on issues of life and family, economic populists, and committed to a new direction in Iraq. This is the way...
