Can someone explain to me why I shut down emotionally?

Honesty with oneself is sometimes a bitter pill to shallow. Looking back at most of my poetry I come to realize what the popular topic really is: Detachment, Hollowness, Emptiness, Numbness; truly synonyms of one another...
