Okay, so Banichi is insulin resistant...now what?

He's not officially insulin resistant but only because I haven't bumped him up to 15 units twice a day. Right now, he gets 13 units twice daily and the Veterinary Assoc. says he's insulin resistant when he's up to 1 unit per pound. He weighs 15 lbs. The 13 units still isn't controlling his diabetes... ow Ow OW!! I can't even pick up my coffee cup!............................

Yesterday, at the clinic, my hands were shredded by a 20+ lb, aggressive cat. Unfortunately for me, the owner didn't tell me the cat was mean until after I already had it out on the table. I'm not so sure Banichi is getting better..................................

When we first discovered Banichi was diabetic, we tried changing his food to a special formula from Purina Veterinary Diets called DM. It was my hope that we could control his diabetes with food. Treating Cat Colds

Colds in cats are just like colds in humans. The cold is caused by a virus so unless there is secondary infection, treating with antibiotics is not going to help. Banichi has to have insulin....blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I was hoping to avoid giving him insulin shots. Even though he's lost some weight eating his special diabetic food in the last three weeks and his blood sugar levels are down a bit, Doc still thinks he should be on insulin. Banichi's lab results should be in today...................................

but I can already tell you they are going to be worse. I've had him on DM for about three weeks and he's lost a pound. On December 28 he weighed 18 lbs and, yesterday, he weighed 17 lbs. Shadow-cat is improving day by day.........................................

Doc was planning on sedating Shadow yet again to remove more dead skin and re-suture the burned area on his side. On Saturday, January 7th, his feeding tube became dislodged and we had to pray he would begin eating on his own (or re-insert the tube). Thank goodness (and thank Cyproheptadine) he is... Shadow will be losing some skin............................................

Doc said we may have to even do some skin grafting. Eek! In my 12+ years at the clinic, I've not seen burns before so this is all new to me. She started cutting away some of the old burned skin that is dying yesterday. Little by little, we'll get rid of the skin as it dies. Right now, we're not sure... Sign in to see full entry.

Cats and fire do not mix...................................................

A couple of weeks ago a local house burned. It was a total loss. The owners are clients of our clinic and were lucky enough to recover all of their cats alive.
