Why Sunday (or Saturday)?

I often wonder why church services are largely relegated to Sundays (or, for some religions, Saturdays)? Is it to punish us by taking away from us a relaxing day off from work?I know tradition tells us God rested on that day, so we must as well. But we aren't resting by getting dolled up, bathing,...
