Sniper Change of Venue a mistake?

Moving the DC sniper's trials to the Hampton Roads area (one is to be tried in Chesapeake, the other in Virginia Beach) may have been a mistake, according to this morning's Virginian-Pilot. Apparently the jury is more likely to be of conservative bent, and this area really was close enough that people were affected by the sniping they did. So many people go from this area to N. Virginia to shop, do business, etc. Could their attorneys have erred? Sign in to see full entry.

How do we determine loyalty?

The military seems to have a problem with Muslims in their ranks recently. Of course, those in trouble were a small proportion of all Muslims in the military, yet, how does one measure loyalty and how does one determine who will value their religious fanaticism over their country's well-being? On the other hand, are we too picky and looking too closely at Muslims in the military, and counting innocent actions and remarks as signs of spying or disloyalty? Sign in to see full entry.

Piers are gone

Several large and well-known fishing piers in the area, particularly in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, were destroyed or carried away by hurricane Isabel. Fishermen and tourists are going to have to find new piers, or build them. I can remember seeing crowds of fishermen enjoying the piers and catching a vatiety of fish. Isabel took that joy away from them. Sign in to see full entry.

Price gouging

It seems as if in the wake of hurricane Isabel, there is a lot of price gouging going on for home repairs, tree removal, etc. Crises bring out both the best and the worst of people. Our State Atrtorney General is getting ready to propose an anti-gouging law to the state legislature. On the other hand, a number of grocery stores were handing out free bags of ice and free cases of bottled wather to people. Sign in to see full entry.
