Best Advice

The best advice I ever heard about writing was Tom Wolf a sixties author. He said to write as if you were writing a letter to your friend. That is in fact how I started writing. I wrote letters to a friend, who told me that I should write. I made several attempts before I actually started writing... Sign in to see full entry.

What Makes Writing Fun

I love to have a project to work on. That makes writing more fun. I wrote a series of poems on each psalm in the Bible. I really enjoyed that project. During November, I wrote a novel during NaNoRiMo--the write a novel in November event. Otherwise most of my writing has been spur of the moment.... Sign in to see full entry.

Plain and simple

I like plain and simple writing best, especially in poetry. I don't like complicated methaphors or poetry that doesn't make sense. My favorite poet is Emily Dickenson. I also don't like the sentimental type of poetry that is the equivalent of the painter, Thomas Kindcaid. There is nothing real about... Sign in to see full entry.

Hard Work

When I was in a college a friend of mine who hated vacuuming found herself vacuuming the carpet instead of studying for her final. She'd rather do anything than study. I got really good at computer solitaire studying for college. Now I'm playing with search engines rather than editing my work.... Sign in to see full entry.

Writing Visually

Writing so that the reader can see what I'm seeing is hard for me. I have such a good imagination that as long as a writer uses words I understand that I can see the environment. Others can't see that way, they like writers who describe the scene. Thus my strength becomes a weakness. Sign in to see full entry.

Making Web Pages Is Fun

You can use pictures, music and words. I haven't figured out how to use music yet. But that will come. It is a lot of work and very time consuming. I have to make sure all of my links work and I load it correctly. I finally found one website where I can load my items and they appear on the browser... Sign in to see full entry.

Summer Writing

My computer is in the solar room of my house. It's a great room in winter because it has a lot of light and has a stove to heat it. In summer the sun shines on the computer screen and I can barely see. This summer I have a iMac which makes it easy to push it back or move he screen at a different... Sign in to see full entry.

Balance

Last summer I started writing. I had written before, but it was never a full time occupation. Now it is. Now I write from early morning to late at night. Some days I don't write much, but I write every day. When I'm away from my computer, I write journals. I've got a large well to write from--in... Sign in to see full entry.

Different styles of writing.

I love to read writing that paints beautiful pictures. But I don't write that way. When I try it seems affected and artificial. I just try to write direct and straight. The problem becomes when I forget to write what I see and so the person reading my writing, doesn't see the picture in my head and... Sign in to see full entry.

Editing

I have writer's block about editing. I wrote a novel with a good plot and some good dialog but no description or characterization so that it seems flat. I haven't a clue how to rewrite it. I want to be a novelist but I wonder if I have enough natural ability to do it. I need to start reading novels... Sign in to see full entry.
