Is the word 'collection' apppropriate for dogs?

A person I know has got 23 dogs of all hues and breeds. Can we say that he has a collection of dogs or is that a word used only for inanimate objects? In that case what is the word for this? I guess we can't say a pack of dogs? It sounds pejorative? Sign in to see full entry.
