Steamed Cat, Anyone?

That accursed respiratory thing refuses to let up among some of the cats. The latest plagued felines are Yama and Fibber McGee. Fibber McGee is, for the most part, a cooperative patient, and he lets me apply eye ointment and doesn't act too bad when I give him Clindamycin. He is on force feeding,... Welcome, Zenith!

Zenith, my 4 year old longhaired tabby, recently decided to be top cat among her kitty family, and started beating up the other cats. I've never figured out why some cats do that (fortunately, most of them DON'T). Maybe it's boredom. Maybe it's a turf thing. With Zenith, though, I got the impression... Sign in to see full entry.

10 Rules for a Loving Animal Parent

I've heard these rules before, and likely, you have, too, but as responsible caretakers of our beloved animal friends, these bear repeating. Every time I read these, I want to hug every animal kid I have. I feel blessed all over again to have my animals, my children. Here they are: 1. My life is... Sign in to see full entry.

Something About Birds

I am not really a superstitious person, but as my Grandpa Nicholson said, "There are some things you just can't explain." I was walking back through the house when Mom buzzed on the intercom. I caught "colorful bird", "flew into the trailer", and "killed itself". Say what?! I turned around and... Sign in to see full entry.

Our Potato Boys are Neutered

We have 3 cats named after potatoes: Spud, Yukon and Yammy. Last summer, I lost my 15 year old potato-named cat, Tater, to some unknown ailment, otherwise, we would have had 4 potato cats. I really don't know how we got started with the potato names. Since we have lots of cats, I guess we just get... Sign in to see full entry.

Spay Day!

This morning we took my middle doggie, Dulcinea, to the vet to be spayed. I borrowed our friend and neighbor, Greg, to help because Dulcinea is a pretty big dog. We settled on Greg driving, with me in the back seat with Dulcinea, and am I glad we chose that way! Dulcinea started drooling, at first,... Sign in to see full entry.

Goat to It!

Here at the Songbird shelter, Mom and I are always striving for ways to improve the kitties' health and nutrition. The latest intensive care patient is Mom's Bumby cat; her vet thinks she has FIP. If that's FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis), that's the strangest case of FIP I've ever seen. Bumby... Sign in to see full entry.

Ember's Gift

The silence in the house after one of my cats has died always deafens me. The ticking of the clock, the refrigerator's motor, all the normal household sounds I usually don't even notice mushrooms into a noise cloud that threatens to overwhelm me. My Ember cat died March 31 at 1:45 p.m. She'd been... Sign in to see full entry.

Nightmare

The good thing about nightmares is that usually they're not real, no matter how terrifying they are; once awake, after a bit, we regain our senses and realize that terrible thing we dreamed didn't really exist. The last couple weeks, for me, have been a living nightmare. I wish it had all been... Sign in to see full entry.

Leo's Grand Adventure

Here at the Shafer Shelter, animals are not allowed to roam. The days of the perfect peace and safety (for all creatures) that were the conditions in God's Garden of Eden are long gone; so our animals are fenced in or are confined within specially designed, enclosed and topped pens for the cats,...
