Got a call yesterday from son John in Seattle. He was at the bus stop on his way home from work, his voice strong, laughing at the stuff we always laugh at. His sis in Florida has been urging him to think about moving to Tampa or St. Petersburg or somewhere, giving him the line that since John & his... Sign in to see full entry.

Back From The Planet Mongo
The piano man from The Center came back last week. Maybe I mentioned seeing him at the library a couple days earlier. When anyone asked what happened to him, he said he'd been visiting the planet Mongo. In other words, "nunya" as in nunya bizness. There was a story in the paper I call the Daily Blah... Scenes from the Library Bookstore
The day was clear, warm for December at 57 degrees F. Not many cars in the lot. This should be a very quiet day at Carnegie's, the coffee/used book shop at the Public Library. A cute little blonde student, hair in pigtails, earbuds plugged into her Ipod, is filling out a test at one table, otherwise... Sign in to see full entry.

Ripples in the Stream
Sometimes when I want my mind to simmer down I think of walks I used to take - well they were miles-long hikes through woods and along Mill Creek, really. Solitary, not even a camera (didn't own one at the time) or sketch pad. I might have taken a fly-fishing pole just to explain to anyone who might... Sign in to see full entry.

Coffee, anyone?
Got to thinking yesterday about coffee, what it costs in the grocery store and elsewhere. There are always - or should I say often - stories about weather or pest damage to the crops, potential price inreases at wholesale and retail levels. I started doing the math about my own coffee budget. At... Sign in to see full entry.

Beauty and The Beast
What's The Real Message in This Story? You probably won't agree with me, but I think this story is dangerous to women. Here's why: its premise is that a woman's kindness and patience with an aggressive, beastly man will change him into a loving, gentle prince. In reality, real men are good-hearted,... Plaid
My closest school friend in Mr. Brewer's 8th grade home room was Patsy W. There were three of us named Patricia in Mr. Brewer's class. I was Pat, she was Patsy and the other was Patty C. Patsy had naturally curly hair that hung to her waist, kind of a dishwater blonde. She seemed to prefer plaid to... Sign in to see full entry.

Stop me if you've heard this one...
Not Schrodinger’s Frog My mind is a box of frogs: dead ideas that hop to life when the lid is lifted. I can hide the scrambling mess, sit on the lid and pretend tranquil reason lives within. The challenge is keeping my mouth shut. plh 6/9/2012 Sign in to see full entry.

The Workbook
"Write Your Own Story" - the workbook - is finally put together. I've been writing here about the sessions we held at the Community Center - Thursdays at 10: a.m. In these meetings we choose from a couple writing prompts or pick a topic of our choosing. Each writes a little memory from childhood or... Sign in to see full entry.

Bright Lights and Broken Hearts
Sounds like a great title for a soapy melodrama, doesn't it? Story of a young girl from a small town in the Midwest who saves up her berry-picking pennies for a train ticket to the Big Apple, where she tries out for a part in the chorus of a Broadway musical, makes the cut, becomes the understudy...
