A true champion
I went for a ten mile bike ride last night; it was a glorious evening and lovely to be out in the countryside in the late sunshine. Clare, Susan and I then sat in the garden until well after dark with no particular desire to move. Today we took our time over coffee, papers, radio and crossword and I...

Serene in the heat
It's been baking here in Cambridgeshire today with sunshine all day and temperatures in the high eighties. A prolonged period of hot weather is really not common and interesting how physically and mentally we are dealing with it. Some just take it in their collective stride and just seem to remain...

Blurred
I'm sorry not to have written yesterday or read your posts. I had a half-day in the afternoon and met our eldest son, Ivan, near our offices in London because we spent the afternoon at an outside concert in Hyde Park, culminating in a fantastic performance by Blur who have just re-formed. I wrote...

Day of progress
Day job going OK today and making lots of progress but still feels swamped so started to do some 'research.' One of the sites I found was Iris Piclense which is a wonderful way of searching for and viewing images and videos on the web. I heard about it a while ago but it certainly has kept me well...

Hot and cold
I worked from home yesterday which meant I didn't have to travel in the heat that has beset England. Having said that, I found it really hard to concentrate on anything at all. Susan was there during parts of the day and I simply spent time chatting with her instead! Sometimes I think you just have...

Together again
Well, after a great evening when Murray won at Wimbledon and the children eventually came home, we watched a film on Sky: The John Denver story. It wasn't very good and very obviously a made-for-tv film with flaky acting and flakier scripts but I've always enjoyed his music. I think that 'Lady' and...

Carnival time
We had the village carnival in Burwell today. I've not seen so many floats carrying waving children for years. You could tell they'd been building and painting them for weeks and were almost relieved the day had come at last. It's been a bit rainy but very warm and a lovely part of the village's...

Michael Jackson: Rest in Peace
Ivan woke us in the early hours to say Facebook was awash witht he news of Michael Jackson's death. To be honest I didn't really sleep very well after that and I'm sure there will be millions of people who will be both affected and reminded of his music. I really hope that this will be the focus...

Hot but cool
I've been working from home today which has been warm but not nearly as warm as negotiating car, train and tube journeys in London. I actually had a good night's sleep last night - despite the heat and cockeral that thinks morning starts at 3.15am. So, refreshed and with a clearer head today has...

Meetings
Am having a week of endless meetings this week but this is balanced by me being able to work from home on Thursday and Friday. When I'm at home I sometimes feel as though I should be in the office taking part in meetings so either state is slightly unsatisfactory! Feeling a bit anxious today for no...
