I was fast asleep
on my commuter train this morning. As usual it was packed and one of the windows was open which is good for fresh air and bad for fumes and noise pollution. About twenty minutes out I was woken with a sudden jump. I had been dreaming that I was lying in bed at home and a plane was approaching the...

I'm tired
I'm tired today. It's a purely physical reaction to late nights. However, I was proud that I didn't blame work or see it as part of the problem because it isn't, it's part of the symptom. Work is necessary for security and all of us would-be writers need that, even if we also need an edge sometimes....

The Ashes
It's been a great day for Englishmen everywhere. We've won The Ashes. I realise, for non-cricketing followers that it would seem somewhat curious to win a pile of Ashes but for us, it's very, very important! The Ashes refers back to an article in the Sporting Tiimes of August 1882 when a mock...

To the lighthouse
Im reading this masterpiece by Virginia Woolf at the moment. I remember seeing a TV dramatisation of it some years ago and remember the sea changes at key points. The children and I went up the coast this afternoon and walked round to an ancient white lighthouse that I remember so well from seaside...

Pension benefits
I receive an annual update from my company's pension trustees. It updates all kinds of financial indicators, along with a commentary which, I strongly suspect, is cleverly written to keep us non-pension experts from asking too many difficult questions. Of course everything has a positive sheen....

Dentist's Chair
Our eldest son is having to undergo treatment for rogue teeth. He has a number of problems including baby teeth not having come out of their own accord (he is thirteen), teeth not pointing in the direction they should and teeth deciding that the inside of his mouth is less preferable to the gums...

Autumn in August
I haven't been around for a while so apologies for the lack of posts! When I last travelled, though, I was standing on the station platform at six o'clock in the morning and sensed a change. This morning, I realised that autumn has arrived. That may sound strange because today is very warm and sunny...

Unexpected
I've mentioned in another of my Blogit entries that my first love died when she was just twenty four. She was a soul partner but not an earth partner. I have often felt her near to me since. She comes into my thoughts when I least expect it (not that I ever really do expect it) or I realise that she...

You know when
you have days when work just seems pointless? I had one today. It's partly my fault because I couldn't sleep last night and spent an hour from 12.45 to 1.45am catching up on some stuff and writing on Blogit. So yes, I'm tired before I start. But isn't it often the case that, when you're physically...

Anyone for tennis
We've just been to to the local leisure centre in the village to play tennis. Our younger son, who is ten, is very sporty and beginning to get really good. He has a natural backhand which I hope future training or coaching will work with rather than against. Our little girly is eight and can barely...
