Home work
I worked from home today which I often get to do once or twice a week - certainly saves on the lOndon commute. I'm always much less tired having had a longer sleep and more relaxing evening. Knowing you have to get up at 5.30 each day doesn't put you in the best physical shape. Having said that, the...

Swallowed
When I was a small boy, I would run round to my grandad’s coal shed, very early on spring mornings to see whether our ‘visitors’ had arrived. He would watch me and, puffing on his pipe, would tell me to be patient and that summer would soon be here. But I only believed him once the first swallow had...

You're welcome
As I was leaving the train this evening, there were two young girls waiting to do the same. They were standing, patiently, while other commuters filed past them without even bestowing a sideways glance on either. The girls didn't try and push in and weren't mouthing off about thewir wait. I let them...

Fragment but remember how to spell it
I’ve just been reading a Headmaster’s Foreword in a school prospectus. Our middle son – Christian – is due to go to High School next September and we have begun to look around the area. Our main mission is to avoid the local, designated school which is appalling in terms of teacher motivation, exam...

Baked Owl
I've just been to a new eating place - The Garden Restaurant. I had Baked Owl, with roast potatoes and garden vegetables, followed by custard tart (with fresh cream) and cherries. This was accompanied by a cafe latte grande. I had the best seat in the house with a wonderful view. Service was very...

Hi school
Our middle child is in his final year of Primary School. We received a letter and pack last night, preparing us for the Secondary School application process. Actually they should just have sent us a ticket with numbers from one to forty nine on it as the system is nothing more than a lottery. My...

Even the salmon mousse didn't tempt me
I've just sat through a very dull meal with colleagues from agencies. The discussion was OK and relevant. The food was OK and relevant but I wasn't OK or relevant. I can talk to people face to face or over the 'phone or via e-mail but I can't engage in dinner table conversation. I just can't do it -...

Queen Victoria wasn't amused
but my son is. He boards at a dance school where the Royal Family used to stay. His dormitory has a conservatory attached where Queeen Victoria used to sit for hours and gaze out over the park. She described it often as one of her favourite places. I was sitting in there yesterday and considered how...

My son plays football
for a local village team. He absolutely lives for the training as well as the games. I think he enjoys the camaraderie and is a true team player. He is a 'creative midfielder' or ['playmaker.' He does score goals but sets more up with his passing than he scores himself. He's also quite a fearsome...

Fighting Temerarire
A poll on the BBC Radio 4 programme has just voted a painting by JMW Turner the greatest painting in Britain. It features the Temeraire being towed from Sheerness to Rotherhithe on the River Thames in 1835 to its final destination at the breaker's yard where it would be stripped and scrapped....
