Square One
Susan and I are back to square one on our thinking of moves/jobs/schools. After a deeply disappointing trip to Thetford this morning we're thinking we should just stay put for the time being. We're pretty confident that Christian will be able to manage the daily travel to school and back on the...

We're upside down
Since Christian knew he had a place starting at the Grammar School in September Susan and I have been in a real quandry about finances/travel/future plans. Christian knows he has to travel there by train - it will take about half an hour - and he and we are resigned to it. I don't know that we're...

Poor Trudy
I've just been out for some noodles with Trudy - a lady from work. We went to Wagamamas under Harvey Nichs, down in Knightsbridge. I had a lovely plate of noodles with shrimps and ginger and she enjoyed a rice dish with assorted vegetables. The place was packed and therefore very loud but I didn't...

In transit
Christian told me last night that if you take one hour to get to work and another hour to get back home again and do this every day from aged twenty two to sixty five, you would have been in transit for two and a half years altogether. I thought of this as I travelled in this morning. I do try to...

Christian made it
I'm delighted to tell you that Christian got through his entrance exam OK and now plans to join the Grammar School in September. He is delighted that they're going to take him, as are we. We both feelt hat he will get a first class education and be introduced and coached in all kinds of new sports,...

On the line
Because of Susan and Claire being away on their little break I’ve been working from home for the last couple of days. I can do pretty well most things from here on the PC, over the web and via the ‘phone. I don’t take this for granted either. I’ve worked at the same company for over 17 years and am...

Safe return
I'm pleased to be able to say that Susan and Claire returned home today. They made good time from Hathrow to King's Cross and I picked them up just after midday. It was strange waiting for them at the station - the train was a few minutes late! - I felt hopeful and happy yet nervous and a little...

Trial and tribulation
I'm sorry I haven't posted for a while. With Susan and Claire in New York I've been trying to spend as much time with Christian as possible, especially as he had his High School entrance exam yesterday. It seems that he got on OK, although we'll know by the end of the week whether he has a place or...

Looking forward
I was tucking Christian up in bed last night which is always one of the day's greatest privileges. H always gives me a kiss and tells me that he loves me - in fact he continues to bid me a good night's sleep as I retreat slowly down the corridor. This reminds me of when my mother (and sometimes...

All was well until 3.36
Had a good weekend until 3.36pm yesterday when it got very very bad. We'd been cleaning the house - a task we all hate - and the children, Susan and I had made a concerted attempt to get it done as quickly as possible. On the final straight, I popped down into the local village to tune in a new...
