A Gathering

They gathered, with sombre mien And funereal chic, To share whispers of the past And somebody who made them great. They gathered where a smile had been As if, bereft, they could seek One moment after the last In a defiance of unwanted fate. They gathered, trying not to cry, To offer a final goodbye.
