Balance Impaired - Not Mind?
You know, I won't think twice now about asking for help after this. Let me tell you about LAST night's near disaster – “almost falling down - but didn't get hurt” tale. I sat down on the floor to put away some dishes on the lower shelf of the china hutch. I needed a hand getting up. Pattie, our dog, was trotting by just as I was needing something right at her level to help me stand up. I put my hand on her as she went by just to give myself a boost -- BUT -- she kept on going, imagine...

DVD's 'n me - What Up?
Has anyone seen he movie that Paul Giamatti is in, "Lady in the Water" (A Bedtime Story)? We just rented the DVD and it helped me take my mind off some disconcerting news. Ron Howard's daughter also stars in it. If you love make-believe come to life, you will delight in this tale. I didn't fall asleep once for even a little while, being the narcopleptic Parkinson's person I am. I liked the “Sixth Sense” and “Signs”, too. The cardiologist's routine followup appointment may hold some of the...

A Loss of Independence
(I have one almost just like this one!) A Loss of Independence This is a complaint I heard often from my father in his 80s. He lived to be 93. When you get to the point when you need help, you start to feel that loss of independence. How much longer until you have to be fed, bathed, clothed, toileted? It all seems downhill once you ask for help. I’ve gotten to that point with my Late Stage Parkinson’s. I’ve been Late Stage for about 8 years now. It’s Last Stage Parkinson’s that I’m not too crazy...

Juggling Meds with Eating
Saturday mornings are so boring for me. It's "bone pill day." Once a week, I take a medication that is supposed to stop my bones from thinning. I have osteopenia, pre-osteoporosis. I have 4 strikes against me. 1) It's very common in post-menopausal women. 2) I am taking medication to keep my cancer from coming back and the absence of hormones, especially Estrogen, which fuels my cancer, gets revenge for killing it off by attacking my bones. 3) Parkinson's patients, especially post-menopausal,...

"No Doctor Here By That Name"
We went to Disneyland Easter weekend and went to the head of each ride because of our mother being in a wheelchair (never diss a Handicap placcard!) Have you ever felt that you were in some true-to-life Twilight Zone episode? I had just had a fast Parkinson's progression in one week. My big toe had started to pulse on a Friday morning. By that night, the whole toe was moving. By the middle of the week, all the toes had a tremor. By the next weekend, I was lying out on my sister's deck in...

Dr. Who?
Can you guess which one I am in 1987? I am second from the right in the blue dress. It is an event I will have seared in my brain forever! I called to make an appointment with my neurologist, Dr. Moroney, and the person answering the phone said, "Dr. WHO?" I had just returned from a great week spent at my sister's house in California. What started out as a "let's get together during spring break" type of comment, ended up with seven females of legal age in our family converging upon my sister's...

Parky Holding Hands with BC !
Since my walk with Parkinson's has included holding hands with breast cancer, I thought I would share some GOOD news I just read about for where I live. For so many years, I have been asked the funniest questions about Kansas. One professorial friend who was a guest at a dinner party at my sister's house in Boston asked, " So, what do people DO in Kansas?" My answer was, "The same as what people do here in Boston, I imagine." He laughed and said that had been a dumb question. I assured him he...

I'm Still Sorta Standing
My husband's Aunt Mary is 82 and she has Parkinson's disease. She has only had her diagnosis for 3 years. I am 53 years old and have had it for 23 years. I am an early onset patient which means Parkinson's progresses slowly as it has in my case. When you are older and are first diagnosed, it can and does move at a faster and equally debilitating rate. Medication have a different effect on an 82 year old compared to a 53 year old. I can always offer support so I wrote Aunt Mary a poem. It did the...

The Most Generous GIft
The Most Generous Gift I duplicated the blogs I have lately written regarding Parkinson's and copied them to this site in one fell swoop. I am not here for the clicks. If you are searching for information, I have shared some of my experiences of a person with Parkinson's who remains insulted by Rush Limbaugh's antics, mimicking this horrible, life-altering, debilitating disease that HAS NO CURE. The only future retirement we have to look forward to is immobility, falls, bruises, broken bones,...

My friends wrote back and told me, "Thanks for the laugh on you!" My sister in Boston thought she knew which one of my meds caused this “compulsive”...
