Who are the Homeless?

When the price of housing is prohibitive and wages are low--some people are not going to be able to afford housing. If the price of an apartment is $700 and wages are $720, you are not going to be able to afford housing. The only people who can live like that are very highly motivated people who are... Everyone should have a home.

I believe everyone should have a home--even addicts and alcoholics. However, active addicts, alcoholics and criminals don't need to live in a fancy house, but basic shelter where they won't harm others. Single room only hotels were a good solution. They kept them off the street. They weren't living... Sign in to see full entry.

After two years

of dealing with a couple who weren't making any progress, I finally have two people living with us who are clean and doing well in recovery. In addition, we've been having a visitor come and visit us for the last two days. She is doing well in recovery also. It is so good to see. There is a world of... Sign in to see full entry.

Wounded Pride

Homeless addicts who get clean and work on recovery have a lot of losses. One of them is to their pride. For most men it is not having a job. For most women it is not having custody of their children and a home of their own. Once you've become homeless it takes a long time to get your life back. You... Sign in to see full entry.

I discovered a companion.

I was researching The Door magazine and discovered that they are run by an organization that works with the homeless. I wrote a note to the e-mail address and got a great response. His organization provides housing for the homeless that is not institutional but personal. I liked the response I got.... Sign in to see full entry.

Drug Court

is becoming a familiar place. I go almost every Friday with one man or another. No one asks who I am. I am a supporter, a cheerleader, a disciplinarian. Drug court doesn't need me. They are do my job. But its good to see an organization in the community that does more than ring their hands and... Sign in to see full entry.

Getting into treatment

Sam can start calling about a bed date for inpatient drug treatment on the 30th of April. He has to call everyday or they will kick him off the list. He has to take care of his criminal matter otherwise he won't be able to get into treatment. I feel that he will actually get to treatment and stay... Sign in to see full entry.

There are two still living with us

who are still using. They have until June 1 to get into treatment. Julie has to have inpatient treatment and she needs to learn how to be a caring, grateful person instead of a self-centered angry person. Sam will go inpatient and possibly to drug court. If they have a bed date they still need to... Sign in to see full entry.

Conversations

Driving home from court, I talked with Barry about his plans and a little bit about his past. He wants badly to get a job--because he feels better working than sitting around. The other problem is that he doesn't have much time to work. On the other hand, he doesn't qualify for General Assistance... Sign in to see full entry.

Yesterday

I had a talk with our newest house member. He is finally getting into the idea of getting clean and getting a life for himself. He is a very intelligent man who grew up as trailer trash as he tells it. His mother moved him around so much that he has no background in math. He went to school and... Sign in to see full entry.
