You're from Seattle? why would you come here?

I have gotten this reaction a couple of times now, and it comes as a bit of a startlement that Seattle has such a glowing reputation in this corner of the world, though it is not a surprise that people who live here all their lives miss much of what we tourists see. Likewise Seattle... sort of... I fear that Seattle no longer deserves its rep as a clean, lovely city in a pristine environment of waters and mountains and forests. Oh, yes, those things are all still there. But now they are harder... Sign in to see full entry.

Mother's Day Greeting Card

To all the mothers who ever tried to create a child, nine months inside and all the years forever after in the bellowing, tears and laughter... To all the mothers who by other means adopted the children of other genes and with the best they understood, nurtured them through childhood... To Grandmas, Aunts and baby sitters who stand in when it really matters... To mothers of all kinds I say-- have a wonderful Mother's Day! Sign in to see full entry.

May Flowers

This cluster of bluebells grows in the dog park where Davy and I go walking every few days. It's a 50 mile round trip, and the nearest off-leash park to where we live. Sign in to see full entry.

It's May, it's May!

Soft and warm and welcoming the world that greets me coming out my door all tensed for chill and damp... All at once the lilacs are in bloom and fill the yard with rich perfume and color bright and fine... A tinny drone I hear and know the hummingbirds are back with their tiny attitudes-- vibrant gems divine! All tension melts away in the gentle touch of sun and so I smile... Spring is truly here and winter done... All the world sighs a soft ‘Hooray! We've once more made it to another May!” Sign in to see full entry.

A new volume of poems

This new collection of my poetry written over many years, is called Love's Not Always Pink. This is the dedication page: This collection is dedicated to love. Some pieces are about love of others, romantic love and the love for a child, or a parent, love for a friend. Some are about learning to love one’s self; some, about love unrequited, unrealized or unspoken. There are a few about loving pets, because that love is often a saving grace in a rough world. Not every poem in this collection is... Sign in to see full entry.

Where's the power?

Yesterday, coming home with a few items for fridge and freezer, I was met by a great silence. Not a hum, not a click, not a tick-tock... and in the gloom, I realized: power's out. Must have blown a fuse. It happens if someone turns on the electric heater to High. All the lights and appliances in one corner of the house go dead. Simple fix: shift the stuff out of the way, open the circuit box, find the one on the wrong side and flip it. Like magic. Yesterday, no magic: no circuit breakers were on... Welcomed home

There are certain animals in this house who will not leave me alone... Violetta ScamperCat, aka, The Vellllvet Claaaaawwww.... who disappears when I do, reappeared quickly when I came in, and spent the night cuddled up under the covers, warm and content: Her primary heat-source is back in its proper place! Davy, naturally, is ecstatic. I am reminded he needs his nails trimmed. He brings me the remains of toys that once were whole and had real shapes of their own. He sits at the edge of my bed... Easter!

If it is the celebration of the proof of Christ's teachings, the wonder and awe of the Ressurection, or simply and beautifully, the settling in of another spring, and the end of a long, bleak winter, I wish you a joyful Easter Day! If it is the Passing Over of the Angel and the transition to freedom from oppression that you are celebrating, may it also be a time of joy! If it is just about family and love and gathering, still, have a beautiful, wonderful day! Sign in to see full entry.

Sometimes, that cup of coffee calls out...

After several days without, this was the afternoon with that comfort espresso--though it may mean a late night again, into the early morning before I sleep. It's not being wired--just a mellow wakefulness that goes on a bit longer than one might want it to, if one plans to be up in the morning. But it doesn't always work that way. Mary ate quite a bit today, more than her usual. She is curled in deep cat-sleep on my bed even now, nose meeting the tip of the tail, and fur moving up and down with... Sign in to see full entry.

Mary isn't well

Annie's cat, Mary, is ill, doesn't eat much, looks like a sick cat with fur all unfluffy and unhealthy-looking. She purrs when petted just right, but it it clear she is wasting. Several weeks and hundreds of dollars of testing has revealed no diagnosis, no solution. Mary is around 12 years old, a tricolor tabby with large white patches on belly and face. She has always been very much Annie's cat, and no one else's, though she has learned to tolerate others that Annie has insisted on allowing... Sign in to see full entry.
