It was a beautiful wedding!

There will, of course, be pictures though not today. There is much sorting to be done, much loading up and down, a bit of editing... Somehow I managed to get shots of myself as well. The location was up in the hills between Frederick, Maryland and Gettysburg in a great old lodge for the reception dinner and dancing. The ceremony was performed down by a pond with an old willow leaning over one side. At 5PM the sunlight was golden and the reflections of a very clear day were like crystal in the... By special request: The Shawl

The Stansborough Farms wool shawl I will be wearing tomorrow evening....and oh so soft and cozy! Sign in to see full entry.

How many goats, how many sheep?

Never too late to negotiate bride-price and dowry... Gives Groom and Father of the Bride something to do while cookery is being committed in the kitchen, for today's rehearsal dinner being held at the house. Today is my birthday, but there is only one spotlight this weekend. Still, I have my eye on a new camera--Nikon Coolpix p90 is looking pretty good! And seeing my first-born well settled is not a bad way to celebrate. To my more fashion-conscious readers, Second Daughter helped me decide what... Sign in to see full entry.

Well well! This was unexpected!

As the throngs begin to gather, my daughter's house begins to fill... The room I had for a week was promised to the maid-of-honor, her man and child...(matron-of-honor,in fact, but these days only some traditions are honored) I volunteered for a couch in the not-completely-finished basement and transferrred my stuff. It was with full awareness and, I repeat, I volunteered. There is nothing particularly noisome about the basement. But one does feel a bit like a trap-door spider... And regardless... The other side

My NZ family--the younger daughter and her husband--have arrived and this morning they and I drove out to Great Falls National Park (making the first use of this year's National Park Pass, an annual purchase which usually pays for itself several times over). They have a rental car so we asked the Magic Voice how to get there. She directed us neatly to the Virginia side of the park. I have never been to that side before, though I have often wondered how to get there. Now I know: you go out the... Sign in to see full entry.

And how are the leaves upstate, as October opens?

After the wedding couple returns, I hope to drive up into NY and the Adirondaks to get a few pictures of the eastern autumn. But with the warmish weather, I wonder if the leaves have begun to turn yet up there? I have heard no word of a hard frost, and down here there is no great fall color yet. Suggestions, anyone? Quick trip to Baltimore... and a Fashion Parade

We had lunch on the harbor, at Phillips--tasty king crab bisque and a salad with crab meat on it. Then we looked at a couple of clothing stores and came home again with various wedding clothing items--much more of what I wanted, than what I brought from home! Today's catch is organic cotten, loosely-woven: a long A-line skirt and a top with a droopy scoop neckline and 3/4 length sleeves gathered up a little from the stretchy hem towards the shoulder. The skirt and lower hem of the top also have... Sign in to see full entry.

safely arrived...

watered and fed, and ready for bed... It was an uncommonly good flight, with passage directly over Canyonlands on the first leg to Albuquerque, and exceptionally exhilerating conversation from there all the way to Baltimore. There will of course be pictures in days to come of the wonderful red rocks! Sign in to see full entry.

6AM wake-up call...

I have this thing about missing a flight... the plane leaves at 9:40 tomorrow morning... husband seems to think the hour plus a little it should take to make the 60+ mile drive means we can leave at 8. ummm... No. Rush hour traffic in two cities... a distinct possibility. Business-folk off on their first-thing-in-the-morning flights = longer security line... No. I want to be there by 7:30, latest. We leave at 6:30. Now I just have to get to sleep... always hard to do before another adventure... Sign in to see full entry.

Narcissism--Mine--Exposed: The Only Candle on the Altar

The two years I lived with my grandparents in the 50s, Grandma told me I was special. My stepmother and father, trying to correct the effects of that 'spoiling' took the opposite tack and made damn sure I was informed that I was in fact not in the least special, that everyone else in the world was more special than I was! Grandma got me first... so my core narcissism is troubled by shame, guilt and uncertainty. But it remains rooted in my deepest self-image. What my kids learned was this: You...
