In the country of whales

(TAPS, as you request...) A camera was one of the many pieces of basic equipment I didn't have the summer of the whales. We had some borrowed binoculars, one pair only(which sounds odd, a pair of one binoculars... like a pair of pants. )between us. Pencils and pens and notebook, purchased at Alert Bay. Over the course of the years, sadly, it has been mislaid: I have not seen that notebook in many a day, and it was not, if I say it myself, a bad little book of research notes and sketches. Well,... The Whales

It was orcas that brought me to the Pacific NW, back in 1975. We drove a car that wanted delivering to San Francisco, then hitched north to the farther reaches of Vancouver Island--a tale in itself, that journey--where we found a ride to a small island with a little bay and inlet, and once we got there, a population of two. We watched whales and everything else in that marvelous place for 5 weeks. The rain was nearly incessant that August of 1975, and we were woefully ignorant and ill-prepared.... Day Six...

He's hangin' in there... Still struggling to get off the street, out of the woods... to keep his finances afloat, a rickety, fragile boat that requires constant bailing. I told him I would pay him to play, and have... and will keep on doing so. Looks like I may have to buy this guitar tomorrow when his bills are due. I should start a fund! Sign in to see full entry.

And the winner is...

Got an email this morning from my son. This term he signed up for a beginning acting class, after last year's theater makeup class tickled his fancy. (Those who've followed this blog a while have seen the pictures not so very far back, of his enthusiastic transformations: http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/Blog.aspx/Ciel/617030 also: http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/Blog.aspx/Ciel/617666 and http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/Blog.aspx/Ciel/616961 ) Well, he has been a live-action roleplay gamer for years. In... Sign in to see full entry.

Three days...

My friend showed up for breakfast and brought his guitar with him. Now it will live here, and if he feels a need to sell it, I have first refusal. I won't refuse, of course, I will own it and he will have it to play. It's not a big name guitar, but it does have a nice sound, better than the ones I have had around here. He and guitars are like me and cameras. He came back this evening and played for a while, we recorded a little and talked some more about putting together a homemade video of his... Two Days...

Those of you who have read here over the past few years already know about my friend who plays the guitar, who does some fairly unexpected and troublesome things from time to time, who owns a piece of my heart for reasons beyond the comprehension of most people who have observed our painful relationship over the past nearly 20 years, who lives outside, who is an alchoholic. It has been almost 2 years since I really got it that I cannot help him by being helpful. He doesn't distinguish a lucky... Sign in to see full entry.

Ahoy there! Cultural accomplishment off the starboard bow!

There are some cultural exposures every adequately-educated person in our society needs, so references to the Mona Lisa, for instance, or League of Nations or "...but I never inhaled" don't leave a blank stare of uncomprehension on one's face. This past 3 weeks, I have filled in one of the numerous gaps in my own cultural exposure: I read all 11 volumes of the Horatio Hornblower saga. That boast established, I wonder, what other reading suggestions do you have for one to be sure of a properly... Sign in to see full entry.

Bags are packed... seats confirmed...

Tomorrow it's off to the airport at 11AM and over the course of the day, over the continent to home. I can never make this trip by plane or car without thinking of the time it took only a century ago to make this same journey, and the tribulations, anguish, losses and deprivations of those who made it anyway. And I think of how, maybe a century from now, this same trip will be made in yet a further fraction of the time--by beaming technology or some other preposterous technology we have not yet...
