Everyone wants a change sometime

Madame sniffed at the peanut between my fingers today, and she sniffed my fingers, and the peanut again, and turned away. It isn't surprising, she has gone through two good-sized bags of peanuts since we started our little nut ritual. Some, she ate immediately, extracting them from their shells, right there on the porch railing. Others she scampered away with, usually two at a time, to hide somewhere, in one of her several caches. The day I offered her a bare almond, she seemed upset it wasn't a... Sign in to see full entry.

Housekeeping and Sunshine

There's sunshine today, and a few clouds, fog-like, over Pike's Peak. It isn't nearly as cold as it has been, but the wind is up, blowing and gusting with gusto, driving the cool air into the house through any crevice, and sending up the occasional bit of one-note music. The thermometers say I should feel warm, it seems odd to experience wind-chill indoors. It was warm by the back glass door while the morning lasted, and the sun shone through. Violetta always finds a warm spot for the duration,... Sign in to see full entry.

More warmth

Temps got above freezing today, though now, the mercury is headed downwards again. That cold water pipe to the one bathroom froze up yesterday but was fluid again this afternoon. I will leave the trickle a-trickling before it gets too cold again. I'm hanging out in the Warm Room mostly and just came up with a warming treat: I sliced an apple and then sprinkled it with cinnamon sugar, and put it in the microwave for about 2 minutes. Simple, tasty, and wholesome! I hope everyone is staying warm!... Sign in to see full entry.

Thermostat Wars

The thermometer says it's 15F outside, and the heat was coming on through the night even though the thermostat is pushed to what is usually 'off.' It thinks it knows better when the temperature in the house, near the thermostat, goes below 55. I'd rather it's set point were lower, perhaps around 45, so I could manage the business myself. Business... yes. The business of heating with natural gas and electric, which is expressed monthly on the utilities bill. I don't mind being warm. But I am okay... Sign in to see full entry.

Snowfall and LONESOME DOVE

When I woke a little before dawn, I looked out to bare ground, and wondered where the promised snow was. Now, three hours later, the snow is about an inch deep, and coming down in fat flakes with no sign of letting up. I have heard that the big soft flakes fall in temps near freezing, that they get smaller--the powder skiers love--the colder the air. This looks in-between, ideal stuff for snowmen and snowballs. I'm watching LONESOME DOVE courtesy of Netflix. I didn't watch when it first came... Sign in to see full entry.

New Year's sundries

My teapots and cups and stuff collection has expanded since the first shelves went up. If you want to see how much, visit this picture, and the one beside it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/8538960067/ And here, also, is the new shelf I spoke of recently, in its own corner. I mentioned also, I think, a couple of flowers that bloomed for Christmas... and then, there is a rock that someone gave me... http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/ Sign in to see full entry.

Tutor or Not Tutor

What a productive morning! Besides serving up peanuts one at a time to Madame who paid an early visit, I also actually cleaned the microwave! It's a bit of a job to reach the top and back panels, but by gum, I done it! And I sat and wrote a few words, jockeyed them around, then called the weekly paper that the cool folks read, and placed an ad offering services as an English tutor, specifying those subjects of most interest this year to high school kids prepping for SATs. Also, offering help to... Sign in to see full entry.

First-day

It's early afternoon and it is cold and windy outside. I was out this morning, rushing to the thrift store 50% sale, for a table I spotted yesterday. I needed a table to replace the one Charlie is reclaiming, now he has done some end-of-year reorganizing and has room for it. The one I saw was, in fact, just like his, but green where his is white. The white one has not only been a useful surface to work on, but also a support for another cup shelf. With an ever-growing collection of cups and... Sign in to see full entry.

The Last Day

It is a Tuesday morning: trash day. The sun is bright, sky clear... temps supposed to reach mid-50s F today. Madame La Darque is on the back porch, flicking her tail about and watching for me to open the door and offer another peanut. On the front deck, little birds of various sorts and sometimes the doves come by to empty the feeder. Generally, it's all very quiet: an ordinary Tuesday. But it's the very last day of the year some folks were sure would bring the end of the world, in fact, that it... Sign in to see full entry.
