Out of the blue...
So, here is this nasty international bug going around, and travel through large international airports carries a definite risk. Some airlines have decided to allow customers to postpone or cancel flights, and get either a credit or an actual refund. United is one of those. Delta, with whom I booked my return flight, so far is not. So, the Seattle trip is off for now, though it may end up costing us a $200 cancellation fee.
