Startled Slumber

Sunlight’s sharp sting shimmers off her cheek and falls shattered on the white sheets in still but broken shards. Sabotaged eyelids stay shut, wanting to salvage the stillness of sleep, not salute the start of day’s schema. Sighing softly, she stretches and yawns, suppleness seeking the warmth of...
